About this blog

Thanks for visiting I Think I Prefer the Tinned Variety Blog.

I'm Cathy Murray and I've edited the diary my dad kept during World War Two when he was in the Fleet Air Arm of the British Royal Navy.

My dad was Norman Buckle and he was trained to be a radio mechanic when he joined up. He was sent to R.N. shore bases in Sierra Leone, West Africa and to a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean called Ponam Island.

In his diary Norman wrote about some of the everyday things he experienced while he was away from home. Home was a small mining village in South Yorkshire and until the war he hadn't been away from home very often and certainly never abroad.

When we were growing up Norman didn't really talk about his wartime experiences and he died quite young in his mid-fifties. After I retired I read Norman's diary and started researching more information about the background to his story. The book is half Norman's diary and half the background I discovered. Together I hope they make for an interesting read for all those who enjoy Family History and reading about the Second World War.

I Think I Prefer the Tinned Variety: The Diary of a Petty Officer in the Fleet Air Arm during World War II is available as an e-book in the Kindle Store.
