My dad, Norman Buckle, was stationed at H.M.S. Spurwing, the Royal Navy air base at Hastings, near Freetown, Sierra Leone 1943 - 1944. When he arrived at Freetown he wrote in his diary: "The town looks very pretty with brightly coloured houses, the outstanding objects being a church and two wireless aerials.
